WESTOVER — Work continues on Somerset County Technical High School “and it’s really starting to take shape,” said Daniele Haley, supervisor of Facilities & Capital Planning for Somerset County Public Schools.

“It’s right on schedule,” with the pre- engineered metal building where shops will be located in back doubling the size in the past month.

“ You can really start to feel the space when you walk around in there,” she reported to the Board of Education at its Aug. 21 meeting.

Oak Contracting Project Man ager Bill Moschler said roofing and “the skin of the building” are on track to provide an environment where interior work can take place through the winter.

The new school, named by the board at its July meeting, will replace the J.M. Tawes Technology & Career Center and is expected to open for students in September 2019.

Superintendent of Schools John Gaddis said he still runs across people who despite more than five years of discussions and over a year after groundbreaking are surprised that they didn’t know a new $38 million technical high school is being built.

Construction on the new Somerset County Technical High School continues. It will replace the J.M. Tawes Technology & Career Center which opened in 1976. Inset is a rendering from the Becker Morgan Group of how the school will look, and appropriately displays the dark gray brick color selected for the building.
